Postpartum Survival Kit.
Secrets your friends don’t tell you about YOU after childbirth.
After pushing a “watermelon” out of your “lemon” there are a few products I recommend you might want to have ready for when you bring your little bundle of joy home. After you leave the hospital with your baby, the last thing you want to be worried about is your mama survival kit if you just had a vaginal birth. These products were so helpful after giving birth twice and I wanted to share them with you.
Girl, go order these supplies if you’re due soon or if your friend is due soon, please order them for her. You’ll thank me later (or your friend will thank you!). I call it the Postpartum Mommy Survival Kit.
- Perinatal bottle The hospital should give you one, take this home with you. It helps to keep your vaginal area feeling fresh. The link here is for the Frida one.
- Tucks medicated pads These work great for the first week after birth to lay in your pad for a cooling effect and they are medicated to help with healing. You can also gently wipe with these for a quick cleanse after peeing.
- Dermoplast spray Cooling medicated mist for tender areas, need I say more? I sprayed it on after peeing for the first week or so. I took the one the hospital gave me but you’ll want to order an extra one if you plan to use it often. Earth Mama Herbal Perineal Spray is another great option!
- Frida Mom Insta Ice Maxi Pads These weren’t around two years ago when I gave birth to Grace but I’ve heard great things. An iced pad for your tender vagina after childbirth, yes please!
- Always pads, Flexfoam heavy flow. I personally liked the Flexfoam as it pulls the moisture away from my body. I had to change my pad every 2-3ish hours the first few days but don’t be shocked if you need to more frequently as your body is cleaning out your uterus. I bled for about two weeks after birth both times but everyone is different.
- Throw away undies the hospital gives you a few of these (you wear them in the hospital right after birth) but many mom friends love these linked here as well.
- Colace Stool Softener I was so scared to go #2 after both babies because of the pain people warned me about so I took stool softener for the first week during both recoveries and was thankful for no pain.
- Pain meds approved by your doctor. I took Tylenol for 2-3 days after giving birth both times.
- Nipple Cream If you’re planning to pump or breastfeed, your nipples will be sore. To relieve some pain, I’d have some nipple cream on hand.
- Lansinoh Soothies Breast Gel Pads. Did I mention your nipples will be sore? The gel pads helped me when Grace gave me blood blisters the second day of breast feeding- ouch! Stick with breast feeding if that’s what you decide, it gets so much easier! And if you need to, make an appointment with a lactation consultant. Find your support system ASAP as they’ll cheer you on when you have days your boobs feel like they’re going to explode and you just want to give up.
- Legendairy Milk Sunflower Lecithin A friend of mine recommended this to help to reduce the “stickiness” of the milk. It may also loosen existing fatty clogs and improve milk flow.
If you’re reading this, you’re most likely about to welcome a little one into the world. I’d like to personally say congrats and welcome to motherhood! Childbirth is one of the most incredible moments of your life. Don’t be intimidated by it rather treasure those moments as giving birth truly is a miracle. You got this, mama!
Sending my love,
Gayle
